MRTA’s 32nd year anniversary with the concept “Go Green Grow Together”, continuing the mission to develop MRT network to provide sustainable urban travel

August 21, 2024, Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) celebrated its 32nd anniversary,
reinforcing the concept of “Go Green Grow Together”, continuing its mission to develop and expand the mass rapid
transit network in urban areas for connecting rail-road-river to develop seamless transportation for urban life and
carrying on operations with care and social and environmental responsibility in
all dimensions through using “Green
Construction” processes to construct “Green Transportation” constructed by “Green Office” organization for
building sustainable “Green Society” for
all people. Mr. Sorapong Paitoonphong,
Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport (Chief
of Transportation Group), Mr. Pichet
kunathamaraks Director-General of the Department of Rail
Transport, and executives of public and private organizations attended the
anniversary event to congratulate MRTA. The guests were
warmly welcomed by Mr. Vithaya Punmongkol, Deputy Governor
(Operations), Acting Governor of MRTA
and MRTA executives. They joined in the activity of air-purifying pot painting to pass on the concept of “Go
Green Grow Together” to the public. On
this occasion, MRTA also organized an activity to offer scholarships to students
from schools along MRT lines to build good relationships
with communities along MRT lines, which are the important stakeholders of MRTA.
Mr. Vithaya Punmongkol, Deputy Governor (Operations), Acting Governor of MRTA revealed that presently, 4 MRT lines
under MRTA’s responsibility have been opened for service. There are the M.R.T. Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line (MRT Blue
Line) and the M.R.T. Chalong Ratchadham Line (MRT Purple Line) which are the heavy rail system that has been in service in
Thailand for more than 20 years. The other 2
lines, namely the M.R.T.
Nakkhara Phiphat Line (MRT Yellow Line) and the MRT Pink Line are monorail system. They
are in the early stages of opening the service but the
government sector consisting of the Ministry of Transport, the Department of
Rail Transport, and MRTA, and concessionaires will integrate and give full
cooperation to accumulate expertise and set the
efficient and 100% safe service
standards for the system as soon as possible. In addition,
MRTA has introduced new innovations and technologies to develop related
services such as EMV Contactless system, MRTA Smart Parking system and MRTA
Parking application, Robot Parking system in park and ride facilities areas at
Huai Khwang Station, Sam Yan Station, and Phetchaburi Station, and will launch
EV Charger service point that responds to the use of electric cars (EV), and Taxi EV service within this year
to facilitate the connection to the MRT system. At the
same time, MRTA places importance on providing safe travel
experience MRT passengers with security and rescue teams of MRTA and
concessionaires/operators that coordinate working together
to take care of the safety for all people in the system effectively. There is also MRTA Lost and Found service helping to track the
lost property for passengers. MRTA also has a proactive
communication plan to raise more public awareness among service users for
creating a culture of traveling by the MRT system, the equitable transportation
to all people, by motivating people to have a good attitude to choose the MRT system that powered by clean
energy as their main travel option, in order to reduce the use of private cars
to alleviate traffic congestion which is a major cause of air pollution, for
sustainably improving the quality of life for people.
In
terms of the mission to supervise the construction of MRT projects, MRTA
continues to increase the strictness of supervision for safety measures
and environmental impact mitigation measures. The MRT Pink
Line Extension Project: Si Rat Station - Muang
Thong Thani Section’s overall
progress as at July 2024 is 63.25%,
69.99% for civil works progress and
49.95% for M&E systems progress
and it is planned to open in 2025. The MRT Purple Line
Project: Tao Pun - Rat Burana (Kanchanapisek Road) Section’s
civil work progress as at July 2024 is 38.22%
and it is planned to open in 2028. The MRT Orange Line
Project: Bang Khun Non
- Min Buri (Suwinthawong) Section
is in the process of preparing for processes of land acquisition and
public utilities survey. Its civil works and M&E
systems work are expected to be completed and will be open for service in 2030. For the MRT Orange Line Project: Thailand
Cultural Centre - Min Buri (Suwinthawong) Section, its civil works was completed and MRTA has urged the
project’s concessionaire to expedite the procurement of rolling
stock and installation of M&E systems so that it can be opened for service
before 2028. For the MRT Brown Line
Project: Khae Rai - Lam Sali (Bueng Kum) Section, MRTA was assigned by
Ministry of Transport to conduct the project’s feasibility
study for additional integration guidelines with the Northern 3rd Stage Expressway System Project of Expressway Authority of
Thailand to be used in the project proposal for approval. In
addition, MRTA is committed to developing mass transit networks in four major
provinces including Chiang Mai, Phuket, Nakhon Ratchasima,
and Phitsanulok. MRTA has proposed the results of the
projects’ feasibility study and investment models to the
Ministry of Transport to consider the most appropriate option before submission
to the Cabinet for consideration.
