Background

       Phitsanulok Mass Transit System Project (Red Line: Phisanulok University - Central Plaza Section) is one of the transportation system development projects linking main cities in the provincial areas and solving traffic problems from main cities in the provincial areas to Bangkok metropolitan area. The project objects to provide continuous, convenience and safe travel according to the Development of Transport Infrastructure Strategy of Thailand between 2015 to 2022. The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning was assigned to conduct feasibility study and preliminary design of Phitsanulok Public Transit System. The project is divided into 2 phases, the first phase is consisted of 6 routes of 80.5 kilometers and the second phase is consisted of 2 extension routes and 2 new routes of 30.1 kilometers. According to the result of the feasibility study, it recommends that the first phase Red Line: Phisanulok University - Central Plaza Section is the appropriate routes to operate at the first stage. Finally, the cabinet already assigned MRTA to implement the project.

Characteristics

       Alignment

       It starts from Phitsanulok University passing Phitsanulok Bus Terminal 2 heading to the north along Highway 126 to meet Highway 12 at Indochina intersection. Then, it goes to the west along Highway 12 and ends at Phitsanulok Central Department Store. It passes several landmarks such as Makro Department Store, Tesco Lotus, Chinnalap Village, Phitsanulok Bus Terminal 1, Phitsanulok Technical Commercial School, Topland Department Store, Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat, Phitsanulok Provincial Hall, Wat Khuha Sawan and Phitsanulok Mueang Mai Village.

       Structure

       The structure of the project will be at-grade track. Its total length will be around 12.6 kilometers.

       Railway system

       Auto Tram System (Rubber-tire tram)

       Station

       The project consists of 15 stations.

        Depot

       Initially, there will be 1 depot at Phitsanulok University which is functioned as maintenance workshop, stabling yard and administration office.

        Park and Ride

       Initially, there will be 2 park and ride areas, at Phitsanulok University Park and Ride and at the area which is opposite to Phitsanulok Central Department Store.
